The NDAA’s dip into education

SPECIAL EDUCATION FUNDING BILL — Lawmakers reintroduced a bicameral bill to increase special education funding over the next 10 years. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Rep. Jared Huffman’s (D-Calif.) bill, the IDEA Full Funding Act, would meet the federal government’s commitment to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

— The details: When the IDEA became law in 1975, Congress committed to paying 40 percent of the average per pupil expenditure for special education — something that hasn’t been met. This bill would increase the average per pupil expenditure over the next 10 years.

— “Providing our children equal access to a quality education helps ensure every student has a fair shot at success. But for decades the federal government has fallen short of its funding commitment to IDEA — leaving students with disabilities at a disadvantage year after year,” Van Hollen, who has been introducing this bill over many Congresses, said in a statement.
